Importance of flood irrigation for foraging colonial waterbirds

چکیده

For a colonial-nesting bird, like the white-faced ibis (Plegadis chihi), landscape surrounding breeding colony can be important. White-faced must rely on areas outside their for foraging, but this part of life history has received little attention, and management even less so. To address knowledge gap, we conducted road-based driving surveys randomly selected, spatially balanced sample survey agricultural fields within 22-km radius 2 largest colonies in Idaho, USA: Market Lake Wildlife Management Area Mud Area. Our study took place 2012 primary objective was to quantify patterns foraging habitat use marsh-nesting species, particularly associations with specific irrigation practices crop types. We documented majority birds flood-irrigated wheel-line sprinkler-irrigated (76%) natural wetlands (13%), which were limited our area (3% land cover). Even though 70% included center pivot sprinkler irrigation, only 11% observations came from type. Most (>85%) used by all had standing water or recent moisture at time use. Though many types when flooded fields, alfalfa (58%) greater than availability (38%). also observed distinct distribution around colonies. Whereas foraged directions (~80%) 12-km colony, over half 12–22 km, almost exclusively south southeast reflecting agriculture area. The most common distance (12–22 km) is found existing literature, suggesting that 12 km may need travel farther find adequate habitat. Flood-irrigated provide habitats eastern Idaho should considered future conservation wetland birds.

Effects of Traditional Flood Irrigation on Invertebrates in Lowland Meadows

Lowland meadow irrigation used to be widespread in Central Europe, but has largely been abandoned during the 20th century. As a result of agri-environment schemes and nature conservation efforts, meadow irrigation is now being re-established in some European regions. In the absence of natural flood events, irrigation is expected to favour fauna typical of lowland wet meadows. We analysed the ef...

Does land irrigation actually reduce foraging habitat for breeding lesser kestrels? The role of crop types

The lesser kestrel is a Globally Threatened Species which large decline has been related to recent agricultural changes in European pseudo-steppes. Irrigation is considered as one of the major threats for this and other steppe birds, but the actual effects of irrigation on foraging habitat selection have been scarcely examined. We studied the selection of traditional dry cereal farming and irri...

The use of flood risk map for flood management (urban area of Nekarood)

Flood is considered as a major threat among natural disasters in the world. This case becomes more important and has a higher risk in urban areas due to the existence of important uses. Therefore, to reduce damages resulted from flood, this phenomenon must be managed and planned using structural and non-structural approaches.
